New York, April 3, 2012 – Richard Meier & Partners Architects and Stradaproject bv are pleased to announce the re-launching of the Richard Meier furniture collection.
World-renowned architect Richard Meier is expanding his timeless collection of furniture with Wiebe Elzenga of Strada from the Netherlands. The Richard Meier Collection is a continuation of the furniture collection created with Knoll International in the 1980’s. In 1984, Knoll International produced Richard Meier’s furniture using fine craftsmanship of delicate rectangular posts as a common element.
The new collaboration with Strada is an evolution of the current capabilities of wood-in bending. The furniture evokes the craftsmanship of classic mortise and reflects Meier’s strong formal vocabulary of architectural expression. Elzenga has worked closely with Meier to represent this classic collection while adding new pieces to the line.
Richard Meier comments: “In my product designs, as in my architecture, I adhere to a modernist vocabulary, focusing on proportion, scale, and the manipulation of basic, strong geometry. Working on the design of furniture and objects for daily life I am conscious of participating in a tradition of designing for what might be considered a complete lifestyle, as have architects such as Joseph Hoffmann and Frank Lloyd Wright, or institutions such as the Bauhaus. In my case, the theoretical point of departure is consistently classical modernism.”
Wiebe Elzenga has worked closely with Meier to represent this classic collection while adding new pieces to the line. Both Meier and Elzenga’s commitment to craftsmanship and modern design make this an ideal collaboration. The Richard Meier Collection for Strada now includes a chair, low and high stools, a low table and a high table, a day bed and a rocking chaise lounge. All pieces are wood with choice of a black lacquer, white lacquer, or natural wood, hand-rubbed finish.
